P O L A N D

WELCOME TO POLAND!

Before I start writing about other countries I think I should write at least a bit about my native country - P o l a n d.

If you have never been to Poland, it's high time you visited this beautiful country in the heart of Europe with rich history, beautiful landscapes and Slavic soul.

There are many places worth visiting here. Everything depends on what you want to see. I come from the south of Poland so I would recommend comming to Krakow as there are cheap flights from different parts of Europe to this beautiful city. Krakow is a must if you plan your visit to Poland as it is really beautiful and I am sure you will enjoy your stay here. Not far away from Krakow, you can visit Wieliczka with a salt mine, Zakopane and the Tatra Mountains or another beautiful mountains called the Pieniny Mountains.

If you are interested in history you should definitely go to Auschwitz and find out what happened during World War II in this horrible Nazi concentration camp.

If you are a religious person why not to go to Czestochowa, the city with a famous Pauline monastery of Jasna Góra, which is the home of Black Madonna painting. The image of Black Madonna of Czestochowa attracks thousands of pilgrims, some of them cover even 350 km on foot within 11 days to get to Jasna Gora.
What about a small town Wadowice, which is a birthplace of Pope John Paul II?

Moving to the south-west you cannot miss Wroclaw as it is a really beautiful city. Then maybe a visit to the Table Mountains with huge rocks or other amazing places in the Sudetes.

In the west-central Poland there is another beautiful city called Poznan. Well, I have never been there, but I have always wanted to visit the city. I think that the Old Market Square with its architecture is absolutely spectacular. The city has got a rich history and early Piast monarchs like Mieszko I or Boleslaus II were buried in the Poznan cathedral. The city is also famous for the Poznan International Fair as well as Malta Theatre Festival which took its name after the artificial Lake Malta which is also located in Poznan and has held many Rowing World Cup events.

In the north of Poland there is the Baltic Sea and there are many popular places where Polish people go on holidays. However, I would definitely suggest going to Gdansk, Sopot and Hel.

Masuria (Mazury) is another region of Poland which I have not visited yet, but it is famous for lakes and is quite popular among Polish and foreign (especially German) tourists.

You cannot forget about Warsaw (Warszawa) which is the capital city of Poland. It was destroyed during World War II and rebuilt after it. The city is changing a lot and it looks very modern. It is hard to compare Warsaw to Krakow as those are two different cities when it comes to architecture and atmosphere. I think that Krakow is definitely a cultural city with an artistic atmosphere which Warsaw does not have as the capital is more modern and is rather a financial and political centre.

And at the end I would like to mention about the Bieszczady Mountains, which are situated in the south-east of Poland. They are close to my hometown, but I have never been there, which is a real shame. I know that they are beautiful, wild and worth visiting so maybe one day I will finally go there, too.
