Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh

As a result of a good weather which finally appeared in Edinburgh, I went to the Royal Botanic Garden last week. 

The Garden is located not far away from the city centre and can be easily reached by car, bus or on foot. It stretches for 70 acres, which to be honest does not tell me too much, but in other words it is big. 

You can admire there many different kinds of plants, trees, shrubs or flowers from around the world. It is believed that the Botanic Garden has got the biggest collection of Chinese plants outside China.

Admission to the Garden is free of charge. However, you have to pay for entering the glasshouse. 

In 2006 the queen and her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, opened the Queen Mother's Memorial Garden. In four corners of the garden there are plants from Europe, Asia, North America and the southern hemisphere. There is also a pavilion, whose walls are covered with shells and the ceiling is covered with cones.

In the Botanic Garden you can not only become familiar with plants from different countries, but you can also walk, sit on a bench or grass and relax.

From England to Scotland

I would like to show some photos which I took last December when I was coming back from England to Edinburgh. 

There are some photos taken at my favourite service called Annandale Water Motorway Service in Johnstonebridge on the way from Carlise to Glasgow. Every time we travel on the route we try to stop there to have a short break. I think that we are fond of this place because we stopped there the first time we were travelling to Scotland and it is a really beautiful place. At the back of the building there is such a pretty place to walk and relax.

British motorways are really good and I like them. My favourite activity in the car is taking photos even though the majority of them are usually deleted later, but I cannot resist taking pictures when there are beautiful landscapes all around and a good light. Last year when we were travelling there were first signs of winter and snow.

Although Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland, there is no direct motorway from England to Scottish capital. Of course you can take motorway and go to Glasgow and then to Edinburgh, but there is a shorter way to reach Edinburgh by taking road  A702. The road is picturesque, the landscapes amazing, but at the same time the road is narrow and winding. British drivers have no idea how to overtake cars and maybe it is even better they do not try to do it too often on that road because it never looks safe when they do it.

Snow in Edinburgh, Scotland

Today Edinburgh was covered with snow. It is more or less the second time this winter when it was snowing here. However, this time there has been much more snow than before and this morning when I was walking to work I felt like walking on a carpet. That was really cool and to my surprise I really missed snow. 

I think I do not have to mention that Bristish people are absolutely not ready for snow and they have no winter tyres and do not have a proper equipment to remove snow from roads so I am not surprised that drivers are scared to drive. 

I have wanted so much to take pictures of snowy Edinburgh, especially from the Calton Hill, but until now I have not succeeded. That is why instead of it, you can see few pictures of snow in Edinburgh from my window.
