Jasło, Poland

It is high time to write about Jasło, my hometown which will always remain in my heart. This is the place where I was born, where I grew up and there will always be a special bond between me and my hometown. There are so many people, memories and places connected with Jasło which I will never forget and I can only sing with Adele:

"Round my hometown memories are fresh.
Round my hometown, ooh the people I've met"

The Market Square in Jasło

Jasło is a small town with about 37,000 inhabitants. It is located on three rivers Jasiołka, Wisłoka and Ropa in the south-east of Poland.

Jasło was given the right to be called a town in 1366 by king Kazimierz Wielki. The town had few markets and played an important role in trade with the Kingdom of Hungary. In 1655 Jasło was captured and destroyed by Swedes. In 1772 Jasło, as a result of the first partition of Poland, became a part of the Austrian Empire.

In 1856 Ignacy Łukasiewicz opened an "oil distillery" in Ulaszowice near Jasło, which is the first industrial oil refinery in the world. He moved to Jasło in 1858 and later the oil well was constructed in Niegłowice. He was also the owner of the chemist's in the Market Square.

During the World War II, Jasło was burned down and destroyed by Nazis in 97%. I have a lot of respect and admiration for all those people from my hometown who came back to Jasło after the war, had absolutely nothing left and did not give up, but instead found strength in themselves and rebuilt the town. That is just amazing!

Nowadays Jasło is famous for oil refinery and recently wine. Every summer the International Days of Wine are held in the town where you can taste different Polish and foreign wines.

The Pieniny Mountains, Poland

The Pieniny Mountains are located in the south of Poland and north of Slovakia. They may not be as popular as the Tatra Mountains, but they are really stunning and worth visiting.

I recommend the Dunajec River Rafting which you can start in a small village Sromowce Wyżne. It is a great attraction and I personally love it. You can admire one of the peaks the Three Crowns while being on the raft, which you can later climb as the trail is not difficult.

Below you can see some of the photos from the rafting.

Zakopane, Poland 05/2010

Zakopane is a town located in the south of Poland in the Tatra mountains. It is called "the winter capital city of Poland" and is believed to be one of the most popular tourist destinations in Poland.

Here you can see the pictures of the largest lake in the Tatra Mountains Morskie Oko (The Eye of the Sea). The picture was taken in May but there were still signs of winter.

Here is a picture from the top of Kasprowy Wierch. You can take the cable car to get there. Even in May it was still possible to ski. I really felt like winter was still there.

Another photo of Zakopane was taken on the top of Gubałówka. You can take a cable car to get on the top of it or just climb the mountain as it is not too much complicated.

A bit of Zakopane wooden architecture - masterpiece which I adore a lot.

If you ever come to Krakow, don't miss going to Zakopane, too. You can spend great time in the Tatra Mountains, visit different places, experience mountaineous climate, culture, food and folk music. It is something absolutely different and I am sure you will enjoy it a lot.

WESTERPLATTE
Westerplatte is a peninsula in Gdansk. It is the place which was invaded by Germany on 1st September 1939 and where World War II started. As a result of the invasion, the Battle of Westerplatte took place there and Polish soldiers fought for 7 days until they were forced to surrender. Because of what happened there this place and the date is extremelly important to Poland and Polish people as it was the very first place where Nazi cruelty started and spread across Poland, Europe and the rest of the world.
