M E L B O U R N E 12/02/2009

It was my first morning in Australia without any haste. I did not suffer from jetlag and that was amazing and surprising at the same time that after such a long flight and a change of climate I felt really good. It was so natural to wear flip flops and summer clothes. In one moment winter stopped existing for me and all the news about heavy snow in Poland seemed to be difficult to imagine in such a warm Australian weather.

I booked a trip along the Great Ocean Road in my hostel. Opposite the reception desk there was a lady who offered different trips. I remember that she could not spell which was shocking for me. After booking the trip I took a tram to the city centre and just after I got on the tram I saw a beautiful harbour Port Philip. At that moment I knew that I chose a beautiful place to stay in Melbourne. Indeed it was a gorgeous place and I highly recommend St Kilda. When I reached the city centre I saw Flinders Street Station and Federation Square. I was walking along the Yarra river where I could see a lot of skyscrapers and to my surprise many palm trees, too.

Then I took a free City Circle Tram which goes around the city centre and I went to Docklands. I wanted to go to the Southern Star Wheel which looks like the London Eye, but on the spot I was told that the wheel had been broken and it was closed. It was opened in December 2008 and closed in January 2009 so it was a real waste of money. In front of the Sourthern Star Wheel there is a shopping arcade Waterfront City Precinct with many shops and restaurants which must have been closed because of lack of customers.

Docklands is really nice, especially New Quay Wharf and Victoria Harbour. It is also possible to see the Bolte Bridge from the harbour. I walked a bit along the Harbour Esplanade.

Once again I took the City Circle Tram and got off on Flinders Street and went to the Rialto Tower which is the second tallest building in Melbourne after the Eureka Tower. On the 55th floor there is a Melbourne Observation Deck. You take a lift and then you can admire the panorama while walking in the corridor. There are few places with gratings where you can go outside and take better pictures than through the windowpanes. It was even possible to see burning bush from the Rialto Tower.

I took the tram back to the hostel and in the evening I went to the beach which was close to the hostel. I walked on a small pier and then along the harbour I went to St Kilda Pier. From that place you can admire spectacular Melbourne skyline.
