Portobello is a beach resort in the suburbs of Edinburgh located along the coast of the Firth of Forth.
I went there in a freezing cold winter day as my family wanted to see the sea. Not the best time to go to the seaside, but with the cold weather which is here almost all the time I wonder if you can really enjoy the beach even in the summer. People may laugh at the Baltic Sea in Poland that it is so cold that you cannot swim, but I do not think it is so bad as when the weather is nice there beaches are full of tourists and people do swim. Is it possible here? I really do not know, but I will try to check it when summer comes and luckily there will be a warm weather here.
Well, when we parked the car close to the beach it was a bit weird as there were building on the right and left, but in the middle you could see the sea or rather the firth which flows to the North Sea. At least there is a sandy beach, but it seems like dog owners like it so probably you can find some unwanted surprises. There is a nice promenade along the beach which is good for walking or cycling.
I think that Portobello (just like Blackpool in England for English people) used to be the main summer destination for Scots, but right now people can afford to go to Spain or any other European country with great weather and I do not think that Portobello beach is as popular as it was in the past.
It is a bit of shame that the city with the access to the sea cannot really enjoy it too much, but as I mentioned before I will try to find out what is going on there in the "real" summer.
