In 2010 I had an opportunity to visit York, not New York, but old beautiful York in England. I fell in love with the city and it is definitely one of my favourite cities in the UK. It is amazing that York has got this kind of old European architecture as it is quite unusual to find in England.
York has got a very rich history. It was founded by the Romans in 71AD and the Roman influence is still visible in the Old Town, which is beautiful. It reminds me of Italian narrow streets where you don't mind getting lost. Well, what can be better than sitting at Starbucks, drinking favourite caramel macchiato, eating delicious ginger muffin and looking at the beautiful green shop and people walking when music lets you slow down and relax. No haste.
There is no shopping centre in the middle of the Old Town, but the shops are arranged along the streets like in Poland. It is the same in Leamington Spa, Bath, Stratford-Upon-Avon or Edinburgh.
You cannot miss York Minster, the second largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe, which is quite impressive.
Oh by the way, I didn't know that Guy Fawkes was born in York. The house he was born in is located close to York Minster.
I was really impressed by York Museum Gardens, where you can find the ruins of St Mary's Abbey Church. They are perfect for photoshoot. Mind the crazy squirrels there:-)
In York there is the National Railway Museum, which is an interesting place not only for little boys. If you want to know more about the British railway history, this is a prefect place to go.
The Old Town is enclosed by the medieval walls, which are a great walk. You can also go for a walk along the river Ouse and have a nice photoshoot of the trees there.
I really enjoyed my time in York and after my visit there I placed York very high on the list of my favourite places in England. I simply love old cities.
