Galle and Unawatuna, Sri Lanka

At the end of our stay in Sri Lanka we went to the Indian Ocean. After driving on normal roads we took the highway which leads to the south. The highway is very modern as it was opened not long ago. It is a toll highway, but it is very cheap for foreigners. However, I don't think it is so cheap for Srilankan people, but as there are more motocycles and three wheelers than cars so maybe it is not a big problem because they are not permitted on the highway anyways.

As there are not too many cars on the highway it is a very quick and enjoyable drive. Apart from that the landscapes on both sides of it are absolutely amazing as there is only beautiful nature with no buidlings. However, the most important is fact that thanks to the highway you can save a lot of time because travelling on normal roads in Sri Lanka takes so much time that is simply shocking, but unfortunately there are too many vehicles and not enough roads.

The first stop was in Galle, which used to be the Portuguese colony and later the Dutch one. The Portuguese fortified the city and the Dutch improved it. The Fort is quite impressive and I really enjoyed the city.

Unawatuna, which is located close to Galle, is famous for sandy beaches and popular among tourists.

In the vicinity of Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka

During three days I had an opportunity to travel to many amazing places around Nuwara Eliya, which is located in the region famous for tea plantations. I fell in love with those picturesque landscapes which my eyes could admire and I am still impressed with this part of Sri Lanka. If you plan your trip to Sri Lanka, it is a must to visit this part of the island.

Horton Plains National Park, Sri Lanka

After the night spent in Bandarawela, we went on a trip to the Horton Plains National Park. The road we took was quite difficult as it was a mountainous one and there were so many windings. What is more it was a very narrow road, but somehow you had to pass the buses from time to time, which was a challenge for the driver, but he managed to do it.

First we were passing small villages with those picturesque and artistic fields, which I simply admire. Then we were driving higher and higher and the landscapes were amazing to me as I love mountains.

Finally we reached the Horton Plains National Park which is located 2130 metres above sea level. The Horton Plains are located on the top of the mountain, but at the same time it is a very vast area with African nature. That was my impression as I did not feel like I was in Sri Lanka anymore. What a different and surprising countenance of Sri Lanka.

The trail to the World's End is very easy and relaxing with "Australian soil" and a bit of a jungle. Once you reach the World's End, you can admire other mountains and the views are spectacular.

Tea Plantations, Sri Lanka

As everyone knows Sri Lanka is famous for tea so I could not imagine my visit in this country without going to this region of Sri Lanka where tea is grown.

From Kandy we set off to the area of Nuwara Eliya which means it was higher and higher as it is a mountainous region and the landscapes were breathtaking. I simply fell in love with this part of Sri Lanka. The tea plantations are so picturesque that it is really hard to describe how beautiful they are and probably even pictures cannot portray the real beauty of this place.

We had an opportunity to visit one of the tea factories which was founded over 100 years ago. A nice man told us about the tea productions, which was very kind of him. So now I know that they pick tea leaves from the same bushes every seven days and they cut them every five years so they would not be too high for the tea pickers.

If you ever come to Sri Lanka, do not hesistate to visit this mountainous and picturesque part of the country as I am sure you will not regret it.
